Empowering Women Through AI at the AI4Her Conference
On June 27, 2025, a vibrant assembly of women congregated in Yaba, Lagos, for the second day of the AI4Her conference. This pivotal gathering was a blend of both in-person and virtual participation, enabling a diverse set of voices aimed at reshaping how women perceive the future of work amidst the rise of artificial intelligence (AI). Facilitating this event was Dataleum, an innovator in the AI landscape, determined to bolster women's representation and utilization of technology.
The opening keynote delivered by Ayo Babajide, Head of Data and AI at Flutterwave, dispelled common fears surrounding AI. She emphasized that the technology is not a threat to women’s jobs but a powerful ally ready to enhance their capabilities. "AI is for everybody," said Babajide, suggesting that understanding and engaging with AI is within reach for all, even those without a tech background.
Insights on AI Integration for Small Businesses
As the day progressed, discussions shifted to the practical integration of AI within small businesses. Opeyemi Obadimu, an AI Data Specialist, highlighted the unique attributes women possess that AI can utilize, such as multitasking and empathy. "They can’t replicate who you are if your business is unique," she said, reinforcing that each woman’s individuality is a crucial asset when leveraging AI for growth.
Financial Empowerment: The W Initiative
A substantial part of AI4Her's agenda was dedicated to financial empowerment. Gbemisola Ajibulu presented the W Initiative from Access Bank, which prioritizes financial support for women-led businesses by offering loans up to ₦100 million, coupled with mentorship and training opportunities. This endeavor is not only about accessing funds but fostering a community of empowered women entrepreneurs.
The Vital Role of Community in Innovation
The conference culminated in an interactive pitching session where women-led startups showcased their innovations and received constructive feedback. This experience underscored the importance of community support and collaboration in driving growth, as attendees encouraged one another and shared insights on navigating the tech landscape.
Shaping the Future of AI in Africa
AI4Her encapsulated a broader movement of women not only adopting AI but actively influencing its development and implementation in Africa. With its focus on initiatives like Cloud Plexo, which offers technical support and funding resources, the conference marked a significant step forward in integrating AI within the business model of many forward-thinking women.
As we look ahead, it is evident that events like AI4Her not only provide inspiration but also tangible resources for women eager to embrace the future of work in Africa. The conference serves as a reminder that as technology evolves, so too can the opportunities for those ready to seize them.
