The Republic of Benin, often overshadowed by neighboring tech hubs, is eagerly stepping into the spotlight as a prospective cybersecurity leader in Africa. At the recent Cyber Africa Forum (CAF) held in Cotonou on June 24-25, 2025, Benin showcased its ambitions to transform into a digital economy hotspot, emphasizing the importance of cybersecurity and digital resilience.
Why Cybersecurity Matters Now More Than Ever
This year's CAF, themed "Resilience of Digital Ecosystems: The Necessity of Changing Paradigm," highlighted the urgent need for African nations to reassess their cybersecurity priorities. With about 1,000 participants, including ministers, startup founders, investors, and cyber experts, the forum made it abundantly clear: cybersecurity isn't just a technical challenge; it's a national imperative. Franck Kié, the founder of CAF, noted that heightened participation from government officials reflects the growing recognition of cybersecurity's significance in today's digital landscape.
A Call to Action for African Nations
Healthier digital ecosystems need healthier investments. Redda Ben Geloune, CEO of AITEC group, called on Africa to take charge of its narrative in the ongoing digital revolution. This requires not only investing in foundational infrastructure, such as local data centers—something Benin has already initiated—but also developing a tech-savvy workforce. Geloune stressed the goal of training one million professionals, including lawyers and public sector experts, by 2030 to support this growth.

Initiatives by Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal serve as models for Benin and its neighbors, showcasing how national strategies can foster an environment primed for innovation.
